Firefly Petroleum Quartz – UV Reactive Fluorescent Quartz | Rare & Mined Out
Firefly Petroleum Quartz is my absolute favorite fluorescent mineral to collect—a true “you have to see it to believe it” stone. Under UV light, these rare quartz crystals light up with an otherworldly glow, earning their nickname for the way they shimmer like tiny fireflies trapped in crystal.
These specimens contain natural petroleum (hydrocarbon) inclusions, which are responsible for their intense fluorescence under UV light. Some pieces also contain fluid inclusions (enhydros) with visible movement, while others contain petroleum-only inclusions without water (often referred to in the trade as anhydrous). Each piece is unique, and fluorescence intensity and inclusion visibility will vary.
This material comes from a very limited find in Madagascar and is now considered mined out, making remaining specimens increasingly hard to source. Because of this, Firefly Petroleum Quartz has become highly sought after by UV mineral collectors, inclusion collectors, and serious quartz lovers.
